چکیده
Abstract Sulphite addition during steam pretreatment of softwoods under acidic, neutral and alkaline conditions was assessed to try minimize lignin condensation. Although neutral/alkaline resulted in effective sulphonation, non-uniform size reduction observed. In contrast, acidic sulphite treatment at 210 °C for 10 min homogenous particle water-insoluble component that 62% carbohydrate 33% lignin. This carbohydrate-rich substrate readily hydrolyzed fermented which indicated the lack fermentation inhibitors steam-pretreated whole slurry. The use high solid loading (25% w/v) a hydrolysis yield 58% an enzyme 40 mg protein/g glucan efficient (46.6 g/L ethanol). improved both enzymatic slurries. Graphical

Industrial-scale steam explosion pretreatment of sugarcane straw for enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose for production of second generation ethanol and value-added products.
Steam explosion at 180, 190 and 200°C for 15min was applied to sugarcane straw in an industrial sugar/ethanol reactor (2.5m(3)). The pretreated straw was delignificated by sodium hydroxide and hydrolyzed with cellulases, or submitted directly to enzymatic hydrolysis after the pretreatment. The pretreatments led to remarkable hemicellulose solubilization, with the maximum (92.7%) for pretreatmen...
متن کاملEnhancing Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Cellulose by Ultrasonic Pretreatment
Slurries of rice-straw cellulose (obtained by delignification and removal of hemicelluloses from the powdered raw material) were subjected to ultrasonic waves at different intensities for various times (constant temperature). Susceptibility of the samples to cellulose-hydrolysis increased initially with pretreatment time, reaching a maximum or a constant level thereafter. Maximum glucose yi...
متن کاملEthanol and biogas production after steam pretreatment of corn stover with or without the addition of sulphuric acid
UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Lignocellulosic biomass, such as corn stover, is a potential raw material for ethanol production. One step in the process of producing ethanol from lignocellulose is enzymatic hydrolysis, which produces fermentable sugars from carbohydrates present in the corn stover in the form of cellulose and hemicellulose. A pretreatment step is crucial to achieve efficient conversi...
متن کاملEnzyme-microbe synergy during cellulose hydrolysis by Clostridium thermocellum.
Specific cellulose hydrolysis rates (g of cellulose/g of cellulase per h) were shown to be substantially higher (2.7- to 4.7-fold) for growing cultures of Clostridium thermocellum as compared with purified cellulase preparations from this organism in controlled experiments involving both batch and continuous cultures. This "enzyme-microbe synergy" requires the presence of metabolically active c...
متن کاملCoupled enzymatic hydrolysis and ethanol fermentation: ionic liquid pretreatment for enhanced yields
BACKGROUND Pretreatment is a vital step upon biochemical conversion of lignocellulose materials into biofuels. An acid catalyzed thermochemical treatment is the most commonly employed method for this purpose. Alternatively, ionic liquids (ILs), a class of neoteric solvents, provide unique opportunities as solvents for the pretreatment of a wide range of lignocellulose materials. In the present ...
